Great version. I`ve always preferred his version(s) over any others. One can find a certain honesty when hearing him do it.

No idea what this has to do with X-factor? nevertheless, great song. Usually get sick of hearing it, as it`s sang by so many people so frequently - though I always have time for Jeff Buckley`s rendition. 5/5.

^ all comes down to personal taste. Rufus Wainwright indeed has a nice voice, but comparing him to Jeff Buckley is a far stretch for many.

Arkaman:

The winner of Xfactor UK 2008 (Alexandra Burke) released a cover of this song and it has become the Christmas #1 in the UK charts.

In an interview she said she didn`t even know who did the original song.
It just goes to show how manufactured these popstars are these days. I wouldn`t be surprised to find out she doesn`t even know what the song is about.

Anyway, I too prefer the Rufus Wainwright version of this song.
I think it`s a rare case where I find a Leanord Cohen cover to be better than the original. But hey.

^ Well that`s painful to know. I guess if we were all to take one plus away from this - it`s that it may open a few peoples musical world to Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and evidently Rufus Wainwright.

Thanks for filling me in.

I do wish people would stop moaning about the X-factor version of this.I agree that the X-factor is shit but she did`nt choose the song.
And where did this version get when it was released in 1994 , nowhere.
Only after he died did all the pretentious people start coming out the closet saying what a great song it was, so why did`nt they all fucking buy it back then.

Don`t buy EITHER version of it. Why? Because Simon Cowell fucking bought the song. No matter which version you buy, it all ends up in Cowell`s pocket. Normally, I just let Cowell get on with his racket, I just think "fine, trudge around in a pile of redundant eighties pop zombie songs, make all the recycled capital you can, good on you." But not Hallelujah. That`s way, way over the line. Everyone`s going "Isn`t Alexandra great?" No the SONG is great. Her version is an embarrassing, overblown piece of shit. WE HAD A DEAL, COWELL!! Keep your filthy closet gay hands away from songs that are actually decent. Surely you haven`t run out of redundant eighties pop zombie songs. I thought you could drink from that well for another generation, and then the songs from the original x-factor would be redundant enough to re-recycle and you`d have you perpetual motion machine. If you really are out of ideas, then just GO. Fuck the fuck off. You`ve got more money than God, all the island boys you can rape, what more do you want? Dicking about with classics was not part of the deal!!! In a year`s time, everyone will be like "Oh I remember Hallelujah, that song from a year ago." and that will be your doing, Cowell. You fucking monkey stump, you jizz wizard, you sawn off end of a dog`s cock. I really hope some "muslim" doesn`t blow up the next elevator you happen to be in.

Simon Cowell dos NOT own the rights to the song, only the X-Factor version.Sony own the rights to the Cohen and buckley versions.
This was just another case of Bullshit British media coverage by the redtop papers

That was absolutely awful, he sounded like he got bored in the middle...then so did I and turned it off. Too full of drugs to feel the music.

I agree Cowell is a pimple on the ass of music but then he`s not in the business for his love of music, he`s in it to make money, it`s just a business to him and all the other "bosses".

If you ask many of the artists in the charts you`ll find their love of music dies as they go on because they have to try to create it while in the strait jacket of the label`s guidelines as to what is "popular music".

I wouldn`t go looking for a lot of good music too because the world is in a recession, labels will be putting out music, that as many 13 yr old amorous girls will buy, as possible. That means crap.

^You`ve got to be on drugs yourself if you didn`t feel how Buckley felt about that song.
