It surprises me that even at this age and time there are people as ignorant as you. Have u even been to Calcutta and look at the way the slums are. When you`ve seen the reality of poverty over there and still find it in your heart to help people everyday without fail, and do all that with a smile on your face then u got the right to talk shit. Hitchens and Dawkins are both modern day missionaries trying to turn believers into non-believers. I personally think people should allow one another to have their own beliefs without someone else trying to make them believe as they do. People either have faith, or they don`t. If people were to respect one another, the world be a much more peaceful place to live.

You guys should read his (rather short) book about Mother Theresa called "The Missionary Position: MT in Theory and Practice." It`s worth a read from either side of the debate (does one exist without Hitchens?), and it talks about her acceptance of shady donations, support of criminals, and pushing her religious views on other people at the expense of their health.

I have seen the reality of poverty in Calcutta. I`ve also seen the wide spread prevalence of AIDS and STDs due to the practice of promoting abstinence over safe-sex and distribution of condoms. The reality of a place where women are forced into prostitution to feed their children and in some cases their whole family, who in turn look down upon them...it`s a harsh one. So if we judge this missionary by the greatness of her intentions, we must also judge her by the terribleness of the consequences of her actions.

What did she do that was so great? She had an institute for the dying. That isn`t helping, it is just giving people a place to die. She thrived on the suffering of other people, and it isn`t just Hitchens who says this. Former Nuns who worked with her have said she was not a great person, that she took money from shady places, that the money she took in went to the church and not just to her charities.
Now the catholics want to turn this women into a demigod. That is what a saint is, a demigod. A person whose body does not rot but smells sweetly, and comes down to help people by performing acts of magick.
All Hitchens wants is to show that she was not the great person people make her out to be. That she was a human being, that she questioned her faith, and that she was flawed. That doesn`t mean she didn`t do some good in her life. It just means you shouldn`t deafiy her.
I agree Hitchens is not a great guy, but ad hominum attacks do not make his position any less true. Simply because he is a chain smoking, alcoholic, who supports the war in Iraq ,and likes to piss people off, does not in fact make him wrong.
