Here`s an easier way to learn the language: Date a girl that is fluent in the language. Trust me, you`ll try hard to remember and impress her.

Rosetta Stone Japanese is a great program!
Some of my assistant professors at TIU use this.
But if your really serious FlavTheApollo is correct(but rude), learning to read/write Hiragana and Katakana should be your first step. Then graduate to first grade Kanji and so on.
Most kanji have multiple meaning or readings (On-yomi and Kun-yomi).
I learned all meaning of each Kanji at school, but for non-native speakers (or people not living in Japan) I would recommend learning Kanji as whole words.
Some good text books are:
** Japanese for Busy People
** Mina no Nihongo (Japanese for Everyone) (this text is ALL in Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Only for the serious student)
** The Complete Japanese Adjective Guide (By Ann Tarumoto) all In Romaji (English)
**A Guide to Learning Hiragana and Katakana (Tuttle Language Library)
** The Basic Kanji Book. (By Bonjinsha Press)
-- Read Write Kanji (by Declan Software)

These are the books I use to teach my forign students Japanese.

Finally if you REALLY want to learn Japanese, become a JET teacher (teach English at a high school in Japan). Don`t become a teacher at an Eikaiwa (eh-KAI-wa) (English language school). Most Eikaiwa don`t let to speak Japanese at any time.
