Cali Wants To Control Thermostats

SAN FRANCISCO: The conceit in the 1960s show "The Outer Limits" was that outside forces had taken control of your television set.

Next year in California, state regulators are likely to have the emergency power to control individual thermostats, sending temperatures up or down through a radio-controlled device that will be required in new or substantially modified houses and buildings to manage electricity shortages.

The proposed rules are contained in a document circulated by the California Energy Commission, which for more than three decades has set state energy efficiency standards for home appliances, like water heaters, air conditioners and refrigerators.

The changes would allow utilities to adjust customers' preset temperatures when the price of electricity is soaring. Customers could override the utilities' suggested temperatures. But in emergencies, the utilities could override customers' wishes.

Final approval is expected next month.

"You realize there are times - very rarely, once every few years - when you would be subject to a rotating outage and everything would crash including your computer and traffic lights, and you don't want to do that," said Arthur Rosenfeld, a member of the energy commission.

Reducing individual customers' electrical use - if necessary, involuntarily - could avoid that, Rosenfeld said. "If you can control rotating outages by letting everyone in the state share the pain," he said, "there's a lot less pain to go around."

While the proposals have received little attention in California, the Internet and talk radio are abuzz with indignation at the idea.

The radio-controlled thermostat is not a new technology, though it is constantly being tweaked; the latest iterations were on display this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Pacific Gas and Electric, the major utility in Northern California, already has a pilot program in Stockton that allows customers to choose to have their air-conditioning systems attached to a radio-controlled device to reduce use during periods when electricity rates are at their peak. But the idea that a government would mandate use of these devices and reserve the power to override a building owner's wishes galls some people.

"This is an outrage," one Californian said in an e-mail message to Rosenfeld. "We need to build new facilities to handle the growth in this state, not become Big Brother to the citizens of California."

What`s the problem? I mean this has nothing to do with Big Brother, Big Brother is the one that would plant a device that scanned your house for "disturbing material". I mean sure the idea is kinda Big Brothery but I don`t see how this can turn into information gathering on people...

Also I think people should do what has to be done to solve problems like energy shortage, Id rather be freezing than using pen and paper to write my school essays...

The problem is that AC requires an enormous amount of peaked electricity. Building new plants to be able to produce enough energy, but only during a couple of hours a day or during heat waves, is just too expensive... So yeah, why not have them regulate it? I dont see the problem

EDIT: "The solution doesnt require tyranny!!!" Fuck that!
Everyone needs to stop bullshitting. For gods sake, not everyone in your country is retarted. They have good reasons for imposing that measure.
A couple of basics regarding electricity:
demand must always equal supply, at all times.
Energy can not be stocked somewhere, except for hydro power.
Now do you really want them to build a new plant that costs several hundred millions of dollars, or even more than one billion, depending on the capacity, for that little bit of extra energy for your precious AC? Also, since the power plant will have to be able to deliver high peak powers, it will have to be coal or gas, so no clean energy sources for you... That will add to the cost, if you eventually wise up and sign the fucking Kyoto protocal, or whatever they now want you to sign in Bali.
Guess who is going to pay it all? Everyone. Who is going to use that little extra of energy to keep your houses cool? maybe 20%. If you live in a democracy, (that all Americans are so proud of), you shouldnt be bitching about something that eventually is only imposed to keep costs down, for everyone, not only the ones who can afford it. If you really want all the power you need, build some solar panels and do us all a favor...
Vote me down all u want, dont give a rats ass

Only those who still falsely hold the idea that it`s a `free country` will have a problem with this.

^^^^don`t worry. Toilet flushing technology is already underway for change. The next step is dual stage fushing. 1 for pee, 2 for poo. Coming to a state near you.

Well crap, I live in California and I don`t want Big Brother watching and controlling my OWN household items. WTF. I work 2 jobs just so I can live a mediocre apartment; they should at least DO their jobs by accommodating the growth of their consumer population.
How freakin absurd.

I like California, but this type of crap makes me want to move.

And yes this is Big Brother, because even though they "have the best intentions" for their consumers, we all know that there will be a lot of shady business with charging extra, raising prices during peek expenditure hours, and the police/government/lord knows who else getting warrants (or maybe even bypassing those ~minor legalities~ that are part of the very foundation of our country and it`s people) to use the information gathered by the Utility Companies for any and all purposes as well as using it to monitor our behavior and location.

Edit: (To japes) I see where you are coming from when you said that "Only those who still falsely hold the idea that it`s a `free country` will have a problem with this." However, I am already well aware that `we the people` means practically nothing anymore in this country- indeed, that is something that I am greatly worried and saddened about. The thing is though, I don`t want to just be stagnate and mindlessly oblivious of my surroundings, taking no real initiative to do something about the deterioration of the place I call home.

The reason why I `have a problem with this` is because I wont allow them to slowly strip me of my rights as an American Citizen. They are slowly taking away everything that makes someone living here on this little chunk of Earth a true American~all the while~ implementing fear as a controlling tactic among the masses and doing things secretly so the population does not have time nor the ground to react to all of the outrageous things our government is and has been doing.

As an American Citizen, I have absolutely no say in what my country does.
As an American Citizen, I want to at least control my own life and whatever I chose to do with it.

Sorry for the rant.

:/
