A dowry (also known as trousseau) is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband in marriage.

Used to be one of the major causes of female fatality in India even beating female infanticide. But the situation has improved a lot in the last decade or so. Better economy and improvement in literacy rate has helped a lot in uplifting of women.

Modern Hinduism is a curse on India. We are still stuck with all the negative aspects of victorian age gender roles, male dominant social hierarchy from Muslim invaders and our own caste system. Land of Buddha and the land of free thinkers is now the most ridiculous country in the world. Of which I am a proud citizen :(

^^ A dowry is actually the `wage` a husband pays his wife for looking after him and his children this is agreed before the marriage ceremony and put in writing, the Indian culture adopted it from Islam and perverted it so women pay men.... purely FYI
