T.E.D - Larry Lessig Law vs. Creativity.

Talk on how the law needs to be adjusted based on today's culture. As for my defense on piracy, I just don't think movies have the caliber they used to have a decade ago. If I really like a song or a movie I usually end up buying/watching it.

Man, as a web designer that man had some interesting points of view about content. I grew up doing just as he said, cutting and creating content out of other content, and he`s right in saying that we need to strike a balance. For example, i could have downloaded superbad the WEEKEND it was release, and on the other hand, companies and artists are forcing people to remove TABS from the web because of copyright infringement.

If anyone wants to make a lot of money very quickly, you need to come up with a solution that works. Not just a quick fix, but a fully functioning solution. I suggest networks and film companies releasing high quality movie/show downloads for a subscribing fee or low per unit fee that still have advertisements in them. You won`t make the huge bottom dollar like on tv, but you can at least start taking in money on the relatively free market of the internet.

The net is around to stay man. There is NOTHING you can do to stop it. *knock on wood

I agree with this guy 100%. His analogy of the user generated content comparison to the trespassing planes hit the bullseye. One key aspect which is of upmost importance is the fact that law is evolving, it is ever changing, and thus, many of the laws that are currently in place will need to be re-thought in order to achieve this balance that he spoke of.

Hopefully, something will eventually be done that will allow this concept and culture to grow without it being stunted be idiotic policies. :)

I don`t think there would be one user on Spiked Humor or who constantly uses the Internet who would disagree with this guy.

No BMW add??????

I agree with what he said It is just one hard problem to solve.
99% of all spiked users are pirates or in my opinion free enterpriser`s. We do need a solution But I wouldn`t know where to start.

Lessig isn`t talking about piracy as in the actual stealing of movies and music by downloading them illegally. He is talking about what people do with it after they have it.

Redubbing Star Wars to Pink Floyd would be an example of what he is talking about...someone is creating unique content by doing that. They are not stealing, nor do George Lucas or David Gilmour have any right to sue you because of it.

Should somebody be able to sue becaue they creatively used your work to produce another work? How far above your house do trespassing laws apply? The answers are relative and ever-changing...that was Lessig`s point.

Anybody who thinks he is condoning outright piracy was simply not paying attention.

I understand Eck but still he did talk about piracy indirectly. He`s essentially saying that there is a great imbalance between the major companies and the copyright violators. Meaning that companies want to ABSOLUTELY protect their copyrighted material including the Re-Writes. Then you have those who outright violate the copyrights by downloading movies and songs. Thus you have no middle ground.

Ideally he made great sense but realistically it`s impossible. As long as people want things free and corporation want us to pay. How can there be any middle ground? Kudos for his speech but there will never be any middle ground on this issue.

kinda funny that the only advert that popped up was what the gent put in the slide show. not the army of one jazz or any other thing trying to get you to buy shit on this site.

I`ve been a pirate ever since metallica banned me from napster. I still have 3 of the cd`s in my closet somewhere...would have been 4 but I was tired of buying cd`s with only 1 good song on it. To this day metallicas greed has shown me that no matter how big, or how many fans an artist has it`s still a profession and most of the time only about the money. Since that day every metallica song had the tiniest violin in the world playing in the back and i just didn`t like THEM anymore. Around this same time my local cd store raised the 10-12 dollar cd prices up to 16....and then 18-20. Concert tickets became a weeks paycheck at the prime age of 15. Then the companies have the balls to get mad at us for not WANTING the product, thinking, oh people are going to buy our shit no matter what attitude. If it comes down to no torrents and bad prices I just won`t watch movies/listen to music at all lol.

PS. If you would like to download the whole metallica ddiscography I am still seeding it and out of the 4 torrent sites it has been snatched over 20 thousand times. THATS WHY YOU DONT FUCK WITH THE PEOPLE THAT PAY YOU!

I`m just so impressed. It`s so coherent and passionate and (something that`s rare for TED) SIMPLE. His point is just so obvious and well articulated. Did I say I was impressed?
