And it looks like the axle snapped.. since the brakes seem to have stayed on the wheels.

It's on purpose. It's to make the car lighter so it can accelerate more for the final sprint. Too bad they've cut the video before the end of the automated car lightening process. After that, the hood, trunk lid and doors pops off and the roof opens like a flower allowing the passenger seat to be ejected with the copilot in it. Then the pilot lines up the car with the finish line, sets the cruise control to maximum and jumps out of the car with the steering wheel. After the car crosses the finish line, it self-destructs to prevent any collision with bystanders and fireworks are sent everywhere in the air and spells out a very nice reciepe of chicken noodle soup in the sky.
