Looks to me like it's not a question about stupidity, but rather curiosity.

the fact that he had a mask lets you know.

Even smart people do stupid things intentionally. The only difference between a stupid person (who does something stupid) and a smart person (who does something stupid), is that the smart person KNOWINGLY does the stupid thing, and is fully aware that he might be at risk. thus the mask.
