How Canon's Camera Lenses Are Made

I for one found this very interesting. Canon goes into extreme detail describing how their high-end lenses are made, from the raw materials used, to the assembly of the lens itself.

Regardless, places such as Amazon.com or BH Photo/Video which are known for their low prices still price that lens at around $5500.

I use Canon and Sigma lenses. Both incredibly complex. My 70-300mm tele contains 14 lenses inside, each made like this.

I guess that $1300 wasn't too badly spent seeing the processes!

If I pay that much money for a fucking 1/2 meter long lens, I'd better be able to see some goddamn subatomic particles and shit. Should be able to prove string theory with that motherfucker, right there!

my grandpa used to engineer a lot of the machines used to make lenses...not for canon though, he worked for kodak, but it's still cool as hell being able to see this stuff going on first-hand. if you ever have the opportunity to tour an optics factory, do it.
