Sodium Polyacrylate - Expanding "Sand"

By just adding water, the small amount of "sand" seems to expand to a large amount, nearly half the glass. The container that he gets it from seems to say "sodium" in the first word and something that starts with a "p" in the second. If anyone knows what was used, please let us know.

Not a clue what it says on the bottle, it isn't even legible in full screen mode.

My guess as how this works is simply due to a chemical reaction similar to vinegar and baking soda. In this case the water reacts to the powders substance and combines with it to make even more powder of another type.

Cool video, more information would certainly be nice. :)

It's just sodium polyacrylate. It can absorb like 200 times it's weight in water. It's used in diapers and they sell it in some magic shops.

If you want to get your hands on a bunch of this go to a very nice science store or avery classy botanical garden. it is also used in potted plants in greenhouses. It is mixed into the soil to provide a time release hydration.
Read up on it here :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_polyacrylate

But a little goes a long way—sodium polyacrylate can absorb more than 300 times its weight of tap water and 800 times its weight in distilled water. This is the link :

I use this exstesivly in my garden; or I should say my wife does. If you buy an African Voilet this is about the only way to keep it alive outsie of the tropics or a greenhouse. "Nny" have you used this before? Not many people know about this substance or were you able to decipher the pixilated immage? Either way good on you for letting the masses know about this.

PS: If you have shool children there are alot of videos that are science related on spiked. My son has recieved 3 A's off of projects we found on here.

Wow, they say it's non-toxic, but think about what that could do to you if you actually ingested a bunch of it.

Heh, not something I'd let my little kid play with.
