It depends what king beverage you use. Water is a polar moluce, where hydrogen bonding occurs between the slightly negative O atoms and the slightly positive H atoms, this is why water has such high surface tension, this is also the reason why you cannot mix oil ( a non polar substance ) which has no hydrogen bonds with water. Same goes for whiskey, however if you use a different kind of beverage, (one that is also polar, like water) this will not happend...

whiskey is polar dumbass.
it contains alcohol.
which has OH groups.
which are polar.

i assume the only reason it works is because water would rather form hydrogen bonds with itself than the whiskey, so it all clumps together and falls to the bottom.

i don't think that'd work...
i think it relies on the fact that the two don't have the chance to mix together,
they just kinda fall past eachother
