BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. - Police say a western Pennsylvania man told them he kicked his girlfriend's puppy to death because he was upset that the pit bull wouldn't behave before the start of the Pittsburgh Steelers game. Twenty-two-year-old William Woodson, of Bridgeville, remained jailed Monday on a charge of animal cruelty in the 13-week-old pit bull's death. A witness told police that Woodson was kicking the dog down the street shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, which is when the football game began. Police say Woodson was supposed to be taking the pit bull for a walk, but the animal resisted. By the time police arrived, the puppy was dead. Police say Woodson didn't like the dog and was upset that his live-in girlfriend bought it. Online court records don't list an attorney for Woodson. Source
ASHVILLE, N.C., -- A 77-year-old North Carolina eye doctor is in hot water with the state Medical Board after a patient said he called her fat. The patient wrote in a private complaint to the board that Dr. Earl Sunderhaus of Ashville called her irresponsible because she was unemployed and using Medicaid while pregnant with her second child in as many years, The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer reported. The woman said she was further angered when Sunderhaus poked her in the thigh and called her fat. "When I got home I was very upset about the way I was treated by him," she wrote in the complaint. Sunderhaus said he was making a point with the woman about how obesity can lead to diabetes, which causes blindness. He said he expects to get "screwed" by the board but he will accept any punishment from the board, even if it means losing his license. "I'm 77," he said. "I can tell them to stick the darn thing." BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Sparkly reindeer-dung necklaces are going on sale at an Illinois zoo that hopes to attract the same holiday shoppers who swept up its dung Christmas ornaments last year. The limited-edition Magical Reindeer Gem necklaces will debut Friday at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington. The $15 pendant necklaces contain dried, sterilized reindeer droppings — sprayed with glitter — on a beaded chain. They'll be available at the zoo's gift shop, or by mail for $20. The ornaments are back, and 450 have already sold this season. About 1,500 are still available for $7.50, or $10 by mail. Miller Park Zoological Society spokeswoman Susie Ohley admits it's a bit silly but estimates the zoo could make $16,500. The zoo lost $200,000 under city budget cuts this year. GIBSON, La. — A real estate agent showing a house got to the basement and found about 100 human bones in a corner. James Kenny, a forensic investigator with the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office, says the bones found Saturday were so old that dirt had saturated the marrow inside them. He says they probably are remains of Native Americans buried long before the house was built. Kenny says he learned that the previous residents would often find bones while mowing the lawn or doing yard work, and would put them in the basement. Half of the split-level house is on top of a circular mound, which parish officials suggest may be an Indian burial mound. Neither the agent nor the home's owner would talk to The Courier of Houma. Bolivian police managed to track down a man wanted for murder from what was described as the world's worst photo-fit. A taxi driver, named in Bolivian media as Rafael Vargas, was murdered in what police said was either a drugs-related hit or a crime of passion. In March, police found his body, which had been stabbed 11 times before being burnt, reports the Daily Telegraph. Officials issued an appeal for help, and one neighbour drew a picture of what she believed the suspect looked like - though many other people have said her drawing resembles nothing more than the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. The picture, more reminiscent of a child's school drawing than a piece of forensic evidence, consists of a pair of eyes, lopsided lips, a broomstick-shaped nose, and straight eyebrows topped with hair resembling a thatched roof. A newsreader presenting the image on Bolivian television has become a YouTube sensation. In keeping with Bolivian laws, the suspect could not be identified. Instead, media sites blocked his face with images of the bizarre photo-fit. Source
Canadian, who was on sick leave, shown having fun at Chippendales, on trip. Photos on Facebook have cost a Canadian woman her long-term sick leave benefits. Nathalie Blanchard has been on leave from her job at IBM in Bromont, Quebec, for the last year. The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits. But when a Manulife insurance agent discovered pictures of Blanchard having a good time, the payments dried up. Blanchard said she was told by Manulife that the photos of her at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on vacation were evidence that she is no longer depressed. Blanchard told the CBC that on her doctor's advice, she had been trying to have fun. She is fighting to get her benefits reinstated and said her lawyer is exploring what the next step should be. Hong Kong is a vibrant city chock-full of people — so much so that the quality of life for those at the bottom tier is atrocious. And I’m not talking about, “Oh my goodness, I have to share a bathroom with my brother and sister.” I’m talking about up to 18 strangers being smashed into a tiny 625 square foot flat with just one toilet to share. One such former cage-dweller is Chau Kam-chuen. Mr. Kam-chuen used to be one of over 400,000 working poor who paid approximately $167.6 USD to live in such an environment. According to him, it’s extremely uncomfortable, especially if you get the top bunk: “You hit your head on the ceiling.” The way it works is that a flat is chosen and then partitioned into multiple cubicles, each composed of wooden planks and wire mesh. Each cubicle then becomes home to one resident. The cage that the woman sits in above contains all her possessions, from clothes to cooking supplies and even family heirlooms. Realistically speaking, the cage is smaller than a jail cell; yet, these cages house thousands of poverty-stricken men and women who have nowhere else to turn. And they aren’t comfortable either. Oftentimes, the air-conditioning and heating doesn’t work. Or if it does work, it rarely gets turned on before 9m. As Lai Man-law, an employed man from Hong Kong explained, “It’s dirty and hot. There are cockroaches and bedbugs, and the air-conditioning doesn’t work.” One wonders though why someone would choose to live like this. Most of these people have no alternative option. These are normal everyday citizens who befell upon hard times and ended up unemployed, homeless, and struggling to make ends meet. The horrific floods of 2008 didn’t help either, as it forced many into homelessness and poverty. To bring this unfortunate situation to light, Hong Kong’s Schoeni Gallery decided to focus their annual art charity event on displaying these cages directly to the public. Their goal was to showcase the widening gap between the poor and rich in Hong Kong. The cages displayed are real cages from real flats. In fact, the man pictured above is Mr. Kam-chuen himself. He hopes that this event inspires more people to offer a helping hand to those in need — especially the poor cage dwellers of Hong Kong. Source
