The Mona Lisa (La Gioconda)

The Mona Lisa was one of Leonardo's favourite paintings, and he carried it with him until he died. Today, it is regarded as the most famous painting in the world, and is visited by many thousands of people every year. Who is this familiar figure? Many suggestions have been made, but the most likely candidate is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk merchant. Another more unlikely - but popular - theory is that the painting was a self portrait. There are certainly similarities between the facial features of the Mona Lisa and of the artist's self portrait painted many years later. Could this be why Leonardo gave the subject such an enigmatic smile?

I think I saw an article aout this recently. They claim she was pregnant when he painted her. They say she is wearing som kind of shawl that was commonly worn by expecting mothers at that time and she was holding her stomache in a protective kind of way.

^ Oh yeah, she does look pregnant now that you mention it. Maybe that is the big mystery behind the painting.

I saw this when I was on holiday in Paris last year. It was pretty cool seeing it in person.

didnt it take him 40years to do this painting and most of them years was trying to perfect her smile, i would have just drawn her pulling a tongue with her middle finger up or something

@skiba its her smile. Its the best thing to come out of the 300 years between 1600-1900AD (sarcasm)

apparently this painting not only famous for the smile, but also the technique used (some micro brush method or something), and the effort put in. and Leonardo might be the only person that can do that, in the world, without using current technology..

Their is also a legitamate theory that it is actually Da Vinci in drag. I saw a show on National Geographic and they superimposed his face from a self portrait and things actually lined up quite well...
