Video:Metrosexuals Banned to Curb Violence

metrosexuals banned to curb violence

a party promoter has banned "metrosexuals" from a popular club night in a bid to stamp out violence.

the promoter, credited with bringing the perth-based event dorcia to melbourne in september, warned punters they would not get in wearing trademark metrosexual attire - for example, low-cut v-neck t-shirts, skinny jeans and pointed white shoes.

scott mellor said the move was made to end a "sports jock mentality" and a growing trend of aggression inside clubs and bars.

"we are really trying to push a party night that is a safe place to go and have a good time without worrying about safety," the 27-year-old said.

"we wanted to shed light on the problems with nightlife in australia. we took everything that we disliked about going out to clubs and inverted it ... no dressing up like david beckham.

"we are about creating an environment where people can be comfortable and confident."

posters advertising the dorcia event hosted by city venue the ding dong lounge warn patrons: "no metrosexual attire, no aggression, no problems."

popular brand ed hardy tops the list of unacceptable clothing, as does "fight fashion" from brands such as tapout. other faux pas include pointed leather shoes, shirts with numbers on them, tight t-shirts and polo shirts with popped collars.

men sporting blond tips or dyed rats' tails will also be turned away.

management also warned that ejected troublemakers would be photographed for a "name and shame" wall just inside the entrance.

"we are not turning away people who look after themselves, wear product in their hair or dress with a degree of style," mr mellor said.

"we are simply providing a venue for people who don't subscribe to the standards of 90 per cent of other clubs."

but eve nightclub boss nick russian said the initiative seemed unfair.

"i think you find the people who make an effort are the people who've come out for a good time, and the last thing on their agenda is starting fights," mr russian said.

he said that a lot of clubs kept a strict dress code with that in mind. "the main objective is for people to come with the right attitude. if people are drunk or aggressive they won't get in."

melbourne councillor jennifer kanis said nightclub owners and managers had the right to refuse entry.

"but i expect refusal to be based on demonstrated antisocial behaviour rather than discriminating against a person or group of people because of the way they dress," cr kanis said.

equal opportunity and human rights commissioner dr helen szoke said everybody was entitled to service without discrimination.

"it is against the law to refuse a person service on the basis of age, sex, physical features, race and a range of other characteristics," she said.

Video:Pot Backers Won't Halt Domestic Violence Ads

pot backers won't halt domestic violence ads

a pro-pot group friday rejected domestic violence advocates' demands to stop the monday debut of three denver billboards showing a battered woman and urging voters to reduce violence by passing a marijuana legalization measure.

the billboards show a downcast woman with a black eye, her abuser lurking behind her, and the slogan: "reduce family and community violence in denver. vote yes on i-100." nowhere is there a mention that initiative 100's passage would amend denver law to make it legal for adults to possess 1 ounce or less of marijuana.

women's advocates said the "disgraceful and appalling" ads mislead voters and ignores the root causes of domestic violence.

"it really is trying to sell the issue of marijuana on the backs of the victims of domestic violence, when the two really having nothing to do with each other," said ellen stein wallace, executive director of safehouse denver, which runs a women's shelter and a counseling center. "i have not seen any research to show that marijuana use decreases domestic violence."

supporters of i-100, known as the alcohol-marijuana equalization initiative, maintain that if adults are allowed the alternative of smoking pot it might reduce drinking, which they say causes more violence.

"a 2001 report by the denver domestic violence fatality review committee found that 50 percent of domestic violence cases in the city involved alcohol and alcohol was involved in the predominant number of fatal cases," said mason tvert, head of the yes-on-100 group, safer alternative for enjoyable recreation (safer).

the founder of the massachusetts marijuana-reform group that independently paid less than $10,000 for the billboards, rejected calls to halt the ads.

"that's the most ridiculous thing i've heard," said joe white of change the climate. "we're the ones who are trying to raise consciousness (about domestic violence). we're (anti-violence groups) allies in this issue. i don't understand why they're targeting us."

Video:Study: Genetic Link to Violence, Delinquency

study: genetic link to violence, delinquency

washington (reuters) - three genes may play a strong role in determining why some young men raised in rough neighborhoods or deprived families become violent criminals, while others do not, u.s. researchers reported on monday.

one gene called maoa that played an especially strong role has been shown in other studies to affect antisocial behavior -- and it was disturbingly common, the team at the university of north carolina reported.

people with a particular variation of the maoa gene called 2r were very prone to criminal and delinquent behavior, said sociology professor guang guo, who led the study.

"i don't want to say it is a crime gene, but 1 percent of people have it and scored very high in violence and delinquency," guo said in a telephone interview.

his team, which studied only boys, used data from the national longitudinal study of adolescent health, a u.s. nationally representative sample of about 20,000 adolescents in grades 7 to 12. the young men in the study are interviewed in person regularly, and some give blood samples.

guo's team constructed a "serious delinquency scale" based on some of the questions the youngsters answered.

"nonviolent delinquency includes stealing amounts larger or smaller than $50, breaking and entering, and selling drugs," they wrote in the august issue of the american sociological review.

"violent delinquency includes serious physical fighting that resulted in injuries needing medical treatment, use of weapons to get something from someone, involvement in physical fighting between groups, shooting or stabbing someone, deliberately damaging property, and pulling a knife or gun on someone."

genes plus environment

they found specific variations in three genes -- the monoamine oxidase a (maoa) gene, the dopamine transporter 1 (dat1) gene and the dopamine d2 receptor (drd2) gene -- were associated with bad behavior, but only when the boys suffered some other stress, such as family issues, low popularity and failing school.

maoa regulates several message-carrying chemicals called neurotransmitters that are important in aggression, emotion and cognition such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.

the links were very specific.

the effect of repeating a grade depended on whether a boy had a certain mutation in maoa called a 2 repeat, they found.

and a certain mutation in drd2 seemed to set off a young man if he did not have regular meals with his family.

"but if people with the same gene have a parent who has regular meals with them, then the risk is gone," guo said.

"having a family meal is probably a proxy for parental involvement," he added. "it suggests that parenting is very important."

he said vulnerable children might benefit from having surrogates of some sort if their parents are unavailable.

"these results, which are among the first that link molecular genetic variants to delinquency, significantly expand our understanding of delinquent and violent behavior, and they highlight the need to simultaneously consider their social and genetic origins," the researchers said.

guo said it was far too early to explore whether drugs might be developed to protect a young man. he also was unsure if criminals might use a "genetic defense" in court.

"in some courts (the judge might) think they maybe will commit the same crime again and again, and this would make the court less willing to let them out," he said.

Video:Gang Violence Continues

gang violence continues

the riots and violent gang attacks in sao paolo, which started last friday night, have resulted in over 80 dead and 50 wounded. of the dead, 39 were police officers, 4 were civilians caught in crossfire and the rest were suspected gang members. at least 90 people have been arrested.

the number is expected to rise, since the pcc, the first capital command gang has not yet shown signs of retreat.

sunday, the pcc changed their tactics. instead of attacking police officers, they turned their attention on public transport, forcing passengers and drivers to leave the busses and setting the vehicles on fire.

yesterday, many bus drivers refused to go to work, out of fear for their lives, forcing 2.9 million passengers to find alternative ways to get to their work.

president luiz inácio lula da silva has said he will send about 4000 federal troops to sao paolo, in an effort to gain control over the streets. the governor of sao paolo, claudio lembo, however, insists that the troops are not needed.

yesterday, according to lembo, all prison rebellions that broke out had been quelled, showing that the situation in sao paolo should be under control soon.

in a reaction to the violence in sao paolo, the police in rio de janeiro have been put on high alert. extra patrols are being carried out in the areas where gang members live.
