student suspended for buying candy

new haven, conn. - contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in connecticut.

michael sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of skittles from a classmate.

school spokeswoman catherine sullivan-decarlo says the new haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

he says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the skittles on feb. 26 was being secretive.

Video:Students Now Able To Take P.E. Online

students now able to take p.e. online

jacob miller's gym class isn't about push-ups or running laps or dodgeball. it's about computers and frisbee.

last year, as the tall, cheerful south high school senior neared graduation, he was finding it hard to complete his physical education requirement while balancing studies, sports and a social life. then miller discovered that through a new online class he could fulfill his phys-ed credit after school by playing on the ultimate frisbee team.

"i would've had to go to gym class and take up an hour every day," the 17-year-old said during a break from tossing a frisbee with a few teammates. "i would've had to give up orchestra. if i'd taken it last year, i'd have had to give up german."

the minneapolis school system's online physical education allows kids to choose a physical activity they enjoy, do it for 30 minutes three times a week -- on their own time -- while keeping an online journal. a parent or coach must confirm the student did the activities, and a fitness test at semester's end will turn up any cheaters.

course choices have ranged from weight-lifting to swimming to horseback riding.

the course is proving phenomenally popular in minneapolis, and teachers and administrators who developed the course believe they've hit on a way to help kids grow into adults with lifelong healthy fitness habits.

"you're always going to have kids who, phys ed is not their favorite thing or their priority," said frank goodrich, a longtime pe teacher who supervises an online gym class. "we want kids to be physically active and fit their whole life. if there's a percentage that we were missing and we're reaching them now -- that's pretty cool."

online classes have grown increasingly common in high schools in recent years. but phys ed has been sort of the last frontier. while available at some online-only schools nationwide, it's been less common at traditional high schools.

"i was a big skeptic at first. it didn't make sense to me," said brenda corbin, a longtime phys ed teacher who ultimately helped write the curriculum for the new course.

teachers said they had to embrace a shift in physical education that was already under way: less emphasis on team sports, and more on personal fitness, health and wellness.

josh boucher, a 15-year-old sophomore, has a hip condition that makes it difficult for him to run. but he also has a black belt in karate, and last summer was able to turn his training into his phys ed class.

he rejects the idea that the online classes are easier than traditional gym. students must study the health benefits of their activities and get assignments on related topics like healthy eating.

"it's time-consuming," boucher said. "we had hours of written work where we were learning about fitness and how to better our lives. more than i'd ever had in gym class."

the teachers are in contact through e-mail and by phone, meeting face-to-face at least twice -- once at the beginning of the semester and once at the end, for baseline fitness testing.

the students "have to do better physically at the end of the semester compared to the beginning," said online pe teacher tammy cowan. "if they don't, i wouldn't pass them, to be honest." it's not hard to spot cheaters, the teachers say.

"you're in contact with them constantly," said goodrich, a gym teacher right out of central casting -- trim and fit with buzz cut and intense stare. "you're going to get a sense pretty quick if they're fudging it."

minneapolis school officials said they're hearing from school districts around the country who are interested in the program. in minneapolis, student waiting lists are filling up fast.

"it's like we started the ball rolling, and it started rolling so fast and now we're trying to catch up," said jan braaten, content specialist in physical education for minneapolis schools.

"it's not appropriate for all students, but for the ones it works for it's good practice for the rest of their lives," said dolly lambdin, a health education professor at the university of texas and past president of the national association for sport and physical education. "the issue here is if students can take it into their lives and move toward self-responsibility."

seniors release goslings, chicks in high school, shutting it down for 2 days

fort kent, maine - six high school seniors in fort kent were charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief after a class prank went awry and ended up shutting down the school.

the six boys ordered 10 goslings and 45 chicks from an indiana company and then set them loose in community high school early thursday morning, school officials said.

the pranksters put the birds in the school gym, in classrooms, in lockers, in offices and into a drawer of a teacher's desk, said principal tim doak. but the animals left their mark on floors, chairs and tables, forcing administrators to cancel school thursday and friday to clean up the mess.

the school will expect full restitution for cleanup costs, which are expected to run into the thousands of dollars, said sandra bernstein, superintendent of school administrative district 27. the canceled days will be added to the end of the school year.

"it's comical when you start thinking of chickens in your school, but it's just another chapter in the book of school administration," doak said.

superintendent: ‘it’s not funny’

a teacher discovered the intruders before 6 a.m. after entering the building and hearing the birds running around the hallways, bernstein said. when students arrived, they were taken to the school gym, which had been sterilized, before being sent home

a crew of about 10 was enlisted to clean and disinfect all surfaces where the birds left a mess — about 70 percent of the school. the birds pose a public safety hazard because of salmonella bacteria, bernstein said.

"it's not funny when it's a public health risk," she said. "salmonella is a very dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly with anyone vulnerable or with immune system problems."

the animals, none of which were harmed, were boxed up and taken to the police chief's house, where they were expected to stay until they find new homes.

a court date has not been set, and the incident is still under investigation, said fort kent police chief kenneth michaud.

Video:Student Climbs Out of Ravine a Week After Crash

student climbs out of ravine a week after crash

james mccormick drove by a ravine near his laurel, md., home many times in the week since his 18-year-old son disappeared, oblivious to the fact that his son lay trapped in a car wreck below.

on saturday, julian mccormick stopped waiting for someone to find him in his upside down honda civic. injured and dehydrated, he somehow managed to climb out of the car and up to the side of the road, where a driver spotted him.

mccormick was able to tell her his name and other facts, but didn’t know how long he had been there, said the driver, leigh ann hess. “the prayers that everyone sent up — the prayers are truly answered,” james mccormick told the associated press after being reunited with his son at the scene.

his son was taken by helicopter to a hospital for evaluation, mccormick said. he said paramedics were worried about internal injuries.“they said it’s a miracle he’s still alive,” he added. the family filed a missing person report after the 18-year-old disappeared a week ago. the bowie state university student left campus the morning of sept. 1 to pick up his girlfriend in college park, but he never showed up.

although it’s not far from the baltimore-washington parkway, the area where mccormick apparently crashed is a very rural area with farms and fields, said sgt. robert lachance of the u.s. park police, which has jurisdiction over the area. the car was found in a creek below a bridge, police said, and the accident was under investigation.

james mccormick said the road goes right by his house, though julian was taking it to get to route 1 on his way to college park. mccormick said he believes his son was stuck in the car the whole week and only climbed out saturday.

Video:Westboro to Protest VA Tech Students' Funerals

westboro to protest va tech students' funerals

westboro baptist church plans to protest the funerals of the 32 people killed at va tech. here is my take on it, with a nice suprise at the end.

"god sent a crazed madman to shoot at your children, and he didn't miss. get this straight -- god sent this south korean madman to kill 31 of your children at virginia tech. was god asleep while this took place? was he on vacation? of course not. he willed this to happen to punish you for assailing his servants."

those were the words posted to the westboro baptist church’s main website, www.godhatesamerica.com. first of all i want to point out that it was 32 people killed, not 31. it is important to get the numbers right, especially when it is a tragedy of this magnitude. every person murdered should matter, even to them.

westboro promised to “preach” at the victims funerals. normally a group of vietnam vets who also happen to be bikers known as the patriot guard riders would show up and push the foul pests around until they left. they have, however, stated on their website, www.patriotguard.org, that they would only make themselves available to those victims who were involved in the rotc program.

with no large bikers to stop them this time, the religious crackpots will no doubt be marching into blacksburg spewing their hate to an already grieving community in the next few days. make no mistake about it, they are looking to victimize those who are already innocent victims yet again. it shows no class and is nothing but a cheap publicity stunt to get themselves some unearned media coverage.

another editor who did not want to be named (dockwats) made an interesting comment after reading of their intentions. he said “some people shouldn’t get to have the constitution.” he was right. though i completely believe in free speech, the laws in place were not written to protect people like this. the friends and families of the students lost should not be subjected to such an atrocity while forced to bury a loved one who was already needlessly murdered. something needs to be done to stop this from happening. free speech laws should not supersede a person’s inalienable right to a peaceful burial.

some of the comments made by the church were threatening to us all. they mentioned that we “do not know horror – yet.” they crossed many lines with this last statement. in the old days they would have been taken out back and quietly shot. too bad we civilized the western states. i hear tar and feathering is fun to watch.

so, what can we do? you could always give them a ring on the old tele and let them know of your displeasure, as is your right as an american. the number is public knowledge. 785-273-0325 (thanks dex!). now, if you do decide to call all on your own without any coercion from me, please be polite, just as they are at their protests. be sure to tell them i said hello.

Video:High school student designs killer concept phone

high school student designs killer concept phone

we've been staring longingly at the butterfly cell phone all morning. the slick slider has a touchscreen, a weather indicator, and wi-fi — not to mention it's totally hot. of course, anything this cool would have to be a concept, but one with an amazing twist: its designer, andrew kim, is just 15 years old. this kid's in high school, for crying out loud, and he's pulling off design concepts that would put the pros to shame, complete with detailed spec sheets. of course, that doesn't mean the phone's chances of actually being made are any better than other wild concept mobile gear we've seen, although kim had the realistic foresight to design the butterfly with only technologies that are in the marketplace right now (tft and oled screens, a music player, an svga camera, etc.), as opposed to wacky stuff like flexible screens or "g4" capabilities. keep up the sweet work, andrew!
