cape town (reuters) - south african's robben island museum will be closed while authorities cull a colony of rabbits that has invaded the site where nelson mandela was jailed. authorities said on tuesday the museum, popular with tourists wanting to see the former president's cell, would be temporarily closed while the rabbits were killed to protect plant life and historical buildings at the world heritage site. madrid, spain - many spaniards were so amused when their king told venezuela's president to "shut up" they want to hear the words every time their phone rings. about half a million people have downloaded a mobile phone ringtone featuring the phrase "por que no te callas?" or "why don't you shut up?" leading madrid daily el pais reported on its web site monday. that's what king juan carlos told venezuelan president hugo chavez during a heated confrontation at a summit in chile last week. the ringtone is thought to have generated around $2.2 million for the companies selling it, el pais said. t-shirts and mugs featuring the words are also becoming a profitable business, and videos of the confrontation have been a hit on the youtube web site. chavez's opponents in venezuela are no less obsessed. pirated copies of the quote have been popping up in the south american country. in venezuela, t-shirts with the slogan in spanish have the "no" in uppercase — a call for voting against constitutional reforms that would significantly expand chavez's power. the venezuelan leader says the changes would empower neighborhood-based assemblies and advance the country's transition to socialism. "the king said what venezuelans have wanted to say to chavez's face for a long time," said jenny romero, 21, a student sporting one of the t-shirts in caracas. a judge unhappy with repeated interruptions from a robbery suspect took rather direct action to achieve silence in court - he ordered a deputy to put duct tape over the defendant's mouth. judge stephen belden, of canton municipal court in ohio, said that the taping last thursday was the best way to restore order at a hearing for 51-year-old harry brown of canton, the repository newspaper reported. brown complained that his court-appointed attorney wasn't prepared and angered the judge with interruptions. after a warning, the judge told the bailiff to tape brown's mouth shut. when the tape was removed, brown said that the judge wasn't being respectful. the judge ended the hearing and sent the case to a grand jury. source
moscow (reuters) - russia closed down its casinos overnight as gambling was banned nationwide, a move the industry says could throw a third of a million people out of work. the july 1 ban shut gaming halls, from gaudy casinos crowned by extravagant neon structures to dingy dwellings containing a handful of slot machines. "i feel terrible. we just let 1,000 people go," said yuri boyev, general director at metelitsa, an upmarket casino where billionaires rolled the dice and russia's gas giant gazprom held a lavish christmas party. vladimir putin, now prime minister, came up with the idea in 2006 when he was president after the interior ministry linked several gaming operations in moscow to georgian organized crime. the kremlin plans to restrict gambling to las vegas-style gaming zones in four rarely visited regions deemed to need investment, including one near the north korea border, but nothing has been built and critics say the zones will fail. though gaming establishments knew the shutdown date for at least a year, few thought the government would go through with it, but officials moved in overnight to close them down. the industry says the ban will axe at least 300,000 jobs but officials in moscow put the national figure at only 11,500. rows of slot machines, usually blinking around the clock in smoky, crowded halls, lay dormant and wrapped in cellophane. moscow deputy mayor sergei baidakov, watching men dismantle poker tables and lay roulette wheels on the floor, said the state was ready to thwart any big to move gambling underground. the queensland supreme court ruled friday that inquiry head tony morris and his two deputies be disqualified from future sittings due to bias, forcing closure of the inquiry. hospital administrators have been criticized for hiring patel when he had been banned from performing surgery in two u.s. states.
queensland state premier peter beattie said it was too costly to set up another inquiry. he said police would pursue patel, the coroner would investigate hospital deaths, a unit would review the inquiry's evidence, and patients could seek compensation.
"we will finish what we started. we will ensure that the people of bundaberg will get justice," beattie told reporters. during the inquiry, bundaberg hospital's head intensive care nurse said a doctor turned off a woman's life support ventilator because patel wanted her bed to operate on another patient.
in another case she saw patel try to drain blood in a "stabbing motion" from a patient's heart, using a hard needle some 50 times. the man died that night after patel told his family he was not critically ill.
the nurse said death certificates were falsified and patients refused transfers to other hospitals to cover up botched treatment and surgery. she said patel was also known as "dr e coli," a reference to the high number of his patients with infections.
a separate government-ordered review of 221 of patel's patients found he had an acceptable medical track record, but he "exhibited an unacceptable level of care" which contributed to eight patient deaths and may have led to another eight.

article submitted by ug7433. brian krebs from the washington post: a u.s. based web hosting firm that security experts say was responsible for facilitating more than 75 percent of the junk e-mail blasted out each day globally has been knocked offline following reports from security fix on evidence gathered about suspicious activity emanating from the network. for the past four months, security fix has been gathering data from the security industry about mccolo corp., a san jose, calif., based web hosting service whose client list experts say includes some of the most disreputable cyber-criminal gangs in business today. on monday, security fix contacted the internet providers that manage more than 90 percent of the company's connection to the larger internet, sending them information about badness at mccolo as documented by the security industry. on tuesday afternoon, i heard back from global crossing, one of mccolo's major internet providers. their spokesman declined to discuss the matter, except to say that global crossing communicates and cooperates fully with law enforcement, their peers, and security researchers to address malicious activity. two hours later, i heard from benny ng, director of marketing for hurricane electric, the fremont, calif., company that was the other major internet provider for mccolo. hurricane electric took a much stronger public stance: "we shut them down," ng said. "we looked into it a bit, saw the size and scope of the problem you were reporting and said 'holy cow! within the hour we had terminated all of our connections to them." as of this writing, mccolo's web site is no longer available. in fact, i pinged no fewer than three different researchers who have tracked activity at mccolo for many months: none could find a single internet address assigned to the hosting provider that was still reachable. officials from mccolo did not respond to multiple e-mails, phone calls and instant messages left at the contact points listed on the company's web site before the site was taken offline. there's more to come with details about this story later tonight or early tomorrow, but i wanted to get this post published before we got scooped on our own story. source
