montpelier, vt.- a man who says he bit into a burger king sandwich and found an unwrapped condom inside has sued the owner of the restaurant. van miguel hartless, 24, of fair haven, said friday he bought the southwestern whopper at a burger king in rutland on june 18 and made the discovery when he got home and started eating it. "my third bite into the burger, it was just a foreign taste," he said. "it was a very sour, bitter sort of taste. it almost had a numbing sensation. "as i went to bite down a little harder, i felt a rubber grind in between my teeth. i saw it half in my mouth, half hanging out. it was an immediate sick-to-my-stomach type of thing." hartless said he waited three weeks before contacting an attorney. his lawsuit, filed nov. 16, names store owner carrols corp., of syracuse, n.y., and seeks damages for pain and suffering, emotional duress and medical expenses. messages left with carrols corp. were not returned friday. a spokeswoman for burger king said it has referred the matter to carrols corp. similar claims have turned out to be fraudulent in other cases. a california couple was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2006 for planting a severed finger in a bowl of wendy's chili in a scheme to extort money from the fast-food chain. hartless, a student at green mountain college, defended his claim. a search of court filings in rutland superior court — where hartless' suit was filed — and the civil court in el paso, texas, where he lived before showed no prior or existing lawsuits, according to the rutland herald, which first reported the lawsuit friday. hartless' lawyer, devin mclaughlin, said he had hartless undergo a lie detector test before the suit was filed, and that he passed "with flying colors." hartless said he has suffered from vomiting, nightmares and emotional distress. he said he also has incurred medical expenses, because he's worried about whether the condom had been used. he said stored the sandwich and its original wrapper in a plastic bag in a freezer in his garage. source, source

click the animated image to see the footprint. a paleontologist has discovered a giant footprint most likely left by a towering tyrannosaur as it pounded the earth 65 million years ago. the footprint, which measures about 2.5 feet (74 centimeters) in length, was found in rocks in montana's hell creek formation, a well-known site for tyrannosaurus rex fossils. "we are relatively confident that it's been made by a theropod, or predatory dinosaur," said paleontologist phillip manning of the university of manchester in england, who was part of the team that found the print. based on the footprint's slender toes, toe positions and overall size, manning and his colleagues have narrowed down the dinosaur's species name to either t. rex or nanotyrannus, a tyrannosaur whose name means "tiny tyrant." t. rex is thought to have grown to about 40 feet (12 meters) in length, while nanotyrannus was likely just about 17 feet (5 meters) long. both dinosaurs lived 67 million to 65 million years ago at the end of the cretaceous period. of course there's always the possibility that a species of dinosaur that is new to science left the print, manning said. a future discovery of a more pristine and unweathered footprint at the site, made by the same species, would also help in identifying the dinosaur that made the latest print. source
there was no halloween bogeyman in the closet for one brooklyn woman _ just a 7-foot-long python in her toilet. nadege brunacci was washing her hands in her bathroom before dawn monday when she glanced back and saw the slithering serpent peeking out from her toilet, most of its body hidden in the pipes. "i turned on the light and screamed," brunacci, 38, told the new york daily news. "it still makes my heart race." brunacci slammed down the lid, put a heavy box on top of the toilet and began calling for help, which came from her landlord and firefighters. plumbers had to tear apart the downstairs neighbor's pipes to capture the snake, she said. it's unclear how the snake made its way into the pipes. brunacci, a restaurateur, says she gave the snake to a friend who keeps it as a pet and named it after her. brunacci says she started using her daughter's training toilet after the scare in her third-floor apartment. and when she brushes her teeth, she said, "i'm looking over my shoulder." source
a giant, smiling lego man was fished out of the sea in the dutch resort of zandvoort on tuesday. workers at a drinks stall rescued the 2.5-metre (8-foot) tall model with a yellow head and blue torso. "we saw something bobbing about in the sea and we decided to take it out of the water," said a stall worker. it was embarrassing enough that mark stahnke (wahukesha, wisconsin) woke up in a neighbor's yard without his pants. then he remembered they contained a cashier's check for $41,093, meant for his son, and several hundred dollars in cash. but he got everything back friday, including the pants, thanks to a man and his dog. stahnke said he doesn't know what happened between when he left the bar and when he woke up the next morning, and police were skeptical when he filed a report. "we're used to hearing weird stories, but with his intoxication we figured this one would be different, that the amount of money wouldn't be exact," police lt. william graham said. "how do you get so intoxicated that you lose your pants?" stahnke said he had met his son at a bar and doesn't remember much afterward. "i woke up cold not knowing where the heck i was, and i didn't realize it at first because i still had my shoes and socks on," he said. "when i got up, i realized, my god, i don't have any pants." tim curzan's dog, joe, found the pants at an intersection, according to a police report. he found the cashier's check and tried twice, unsuccessfully, to deliver it and the cash to where he thought the owner lived. on wednesday, the pants were still at the intersection, so curzan took them to the police, who contacted stahnke to claim his belongings. cnn

they're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in china. the 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on neilingding island, in goangdong province. after being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon. the blossoming relationship helped to revive the macaque who has developed a new lease of life, say staff at the sanctuary. now the unlikely duo are never far from each other's side, but they aren't the only ones to strike up an unusual friendship. earlier this year a pig adopted a tiger cub and raised him along with her piglets because his mother couldn't feed him. and in 2005 a baby dear named mi-lu befriended lurcher geoffrey at the knowsley animal park in merseyside after she was rejected by her mother. source: dailymail.co.uk
an escaped convict has been recaptured in taiwan - at a barbecue party organized at the local police station. police in xinzhu city invited residents to celebrate the moon festival with them. but officers could not believe their eyes when they saw an escaped drug dealer called chen, who had just been listed as one of the city’s most wanted criminals, at the party. police officer cai zhengtong, who was in charge of the barbecue, said: “i saw a man dressed in an eye-catching yellow windbreaker enter the place and sit in the corner. he was enjoying the barbecue with the others.” police at the party quickly arrested chen. he told officers he thought it would have been the last place police would have thought of looking for him. source
