people have changed their names to some crazy things before. this example is no exception. a nineteen-year-old staff member of the peta (people for the ethical treatment of animals) had his name legally changed to kentuckyfriedcruelty.com. kentuckyfriedcruelty.com changed his name as a protest to the supposed unethical abuse of chickens by the food chain giant kfc’s suppliers."people don't believe me at first when i tell them my name, but it never fails to spark a discussion," kentuckyfriedcruelty.com told media. by changing his name, kentuckyfriedcruelty.com hopes to promote a boycott in the peta’s ongoing anti-kfc campaign.
8 syllables, imagine singing the name game with that...

a man who said he bought a device that let him change traffic lights from red to green has received a $50 ticket on suspicion of interfering with a traffic signal. jason niccum of longmont told the daily times-call that the device, which he bought on ebay for $100, helped him cut his time driving to work. "i guess in the two years i had it, that thing paid for itself," he told the newspaper wednesday. niccum was cited march 29 after police said they found him using a strobe-like device to change traffic signals. "i'm always running late," police quoted niccum as saying in an incident report. the device, called an opticon, is similar to what firefighters use to change lights when they respond to emergencies. it emits an infrared pulse that receivers on the traffic lights pick up. niccum was cited after city traffic engineers who noticed repeated traffic-light disruptions on certain intersections spotted a white ford pickup passing by whenever the light patterns were disrupted. city traffic engineer joe olson said traffic engineers plan to update the city's opticon system this year to block unauthorized light-changing signals.source

illinois- an artist says the only way he can truly express himself is by legally changing his name to "in god we trust." yes. first name, "in god." last name, "we trust." school bus driver and amateur artist steve kreuscher of zion will appear in a lake county court june 13, hoping the judge will grant his request. "i want this with all my heart," says the 57-year-old father of four. kreuscher, a christian who gave up on organized religion 20 years ago, said the new name would symbolize the story of his life. "i've had to trust god through incredibly hard times," he said. going through an "extremely painful" divorce, bouts of severe depression, money problems and a life-threatening home invasion, he believes god protected him through it all. he's also worried atheists might finally be successful in having the phrase "in god we trust" removed from u.s. currency. "those words are an endangered species," kreuscher said. "you might take it off the money, but you can't take away my name." he remembers when the phrase "god reigns" was removed from the zion city seal in 1992 after the courts deemed it as unconstitutional. kreuscher is confident the judge will allow the change and believes his request won't violate the regulations. northbrook attorney alan pearlman, who has handled hundreds of name change cases, said he's not aware of any specific list of rules. but he said a judge can deny names that are racial slurs or considered obscene. if they violate trademarks, or duplicate the name of a celebrity, they would likely be rejected. "i doubt a judge would let you change your name to brad pitt," he said. living celebrities might not be copied, but mythical characters are apparently fair game. in 1997, robert rion of mundelein succeeded in having his name changed to santa claus. pearlman said the most common reasons people change their names is divorce and adoption. the county charges $246 for the petition. in addition, it requires the person to publish a legal notice in the newspaper three times. that could cost as much as $150. "that will be the best $400 i've ever spent," kreuscher said. he said he would love to be able to sign his artwork with the new moniker. inspired by the work of salvador dali and m.c. escher, kreuscher said he creates surrealistic images using colored pencils. "'in god we trust' fully expresses who i am as an artist and a person," he said. "you don't know how bad i want this." more interesting legal name changes: santa claus: robert rion of mundelein, 1997 goveg.com: karin robertson of virginia, 2003 megatron: michael burrows of washington, 2007 optimus prime: scott nall of ohio, 2001 pro-life: marvin richardson of idaho, 2008 low tax: byron looper of tennessee, 1998 jesus christ: jose espinal of new york, 2005 source
building boss howard shelley carried out the ultimate diy conversion — by castrating himself so he could become a woman. the 42-year-old dad of two decided on the drastic move after being told he would have to wait at least two years for a sex change on the nhs. he found a website which gave a step-by-step guide to the eye-watering home surgery, then waited till wife janet went out before setting to work with a kitchen knife in the loo. with the job done, he wrapped his severed appendages in a cloth and dropped them in the bin. then he drove five miles to his local gp, explained what he’d done, and was packed off for treatment at the stoke mandeville hospital, near aylesbury, bucks. amazingly, three days later he was back at his desk. howard, who wants to be known as holli, said: “it was very painful, but the moment i cut them off i felt all woman. “it was such a relief. i’d felt all my life i was a woman trapped in a man’s body and i couldn’t wait two years dressing and living as a female to get a sex change on the nhs. i’m the sort of guy who, when i make up my mind to do something, wants it done there and then. i didn’t want to be a man any more so i decided to do it myself.” howard, who has two sons and has now split with his missus, is md of their girls-only firm women builders — based in bletchley. he revealed how he began researching diy castration after he became frustrated with medics. he said: “none of them seemed to understand. they kept asking if i was gay or a transvestite. i’m not. “in the end, i turned to the net — it’s amazing what you can find. “following the instructions, i sterilised everything and made a tourniquet with rubber bands. “the worst bit was steeling myself for the first cut. the whole thing took six minutes. it was agony, but i knew i couldn’t stop.” howard has now been referred to a gender change clinic and is awaiting approval for funding to receive female growth hormones. he is saving up £5,000 for a full sex-change operation in thailand. he said: “i want breasts and hips — then i can be a real woman.” janet, 42, who has an mbe for setting up their firm, said: “we still love each other. i’m just angry he had to take such extreme action.” source: thesun.co.uk
new observations by the international cassini spacecraft reveal that saturn's trademark shimmering rings, which have dazzled astronomers since galileo's time, have dramatically changed over just the past 25 years.
among the most surprising findings is that parts of saturn's innermost ring — the d ring — have grown dimmer since the voyager spacecraft flew by the planet in 1981, and a piece of the d ring has moved 125 miles inward toward saturn.
while scientists puzzle over what caused the changes, their observations could reveal something about the age and lifetime of the rings.
cassini-related discoveries were discussed monday at a meeting of the american astronomical society's division of planetary sciences in cambridge, england.
"i don't think saturn's rings will disappear anytime soon, but this tells us how the rings are evolving and how long they might last, " deputy project scientist linda spilker said in a telephone interview from england.
scientists are interested in saturn's rings because they are a model of the disk of gas and dust that initially surrounded the sun. studying them could yield important clues about how the planets formed from that disc 4.5 billion years ago.
the ring observations were made this summer. the $3.3 billion cassini mission, funded by nasa and the european and italian space agencies, was launched in 1997. cassini is managed by nasa's jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena.
